Day wise Itinerary
Day 1
Your adventure starts in Valparaíso, also called ‘Valpo’ for short by the locals. This was once a major seaport for ships crossing between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, but with the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, that golden age of commerce came to a halt. But if you take a stroll along the port before embarking on MS Fram, you will definitely get a feel for its old greatness.
Thankfully, the city has much more going for it. A diverse arts scene, thriving foodie culture, vintage funiculars and hill-top neighbourhoods covered in colourful houses means it has enviable comparisons with San Francisco. Alegre district seems to encapsulate each one of those elements. Hop between the cafés and restaurants here and enjoy views over the city and nearby sea. Make sure you also visit the UNESCO-listed Historic Quarter where you can admire beautiful buildings and street art.

Day 2-3
Your expedition cruise has finally begun, and you can enjoy two days of sailing along the scenic Pacific coast of Chile. Spending your days on deck as we glide by the exceptional scenery is always a good idea. You might even spot wildlife such as migrating whales and even albatross. This is also when the Expedition Team start their lecture programme to prepare you for the experiences that await you. Learn about the science, the wildlife and the history of the area, and take part in Citizen Science projects in the Science Center. You can also attend art classes where you among other things can draw or sculpt your favourite penguin. There is always plenty to do. And if you don’t really want to do anything, the Explorer Lounge & Bar is the perfect place for doing – or rather not doing – just that.
Day 4
Castro is the capital of Chiloé Island, set among windswept hills and green vegetation. Most visitors immediately make a beeline to the wharf at Gamboa district to see brightly painted wooden houses, called ‘palafitos’, mounted on stilts along the Fiordo de Castro. But this little big city has more to offer. If you head down to the central town square, you can visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Iglesia San Francisco, an old wooden Neo-Gothic church that dates back to the founding of the city in 1567. If you fancy something more modern, the Museum of Modern Art of Chiloé is also worth a visit. And should you get hungry on your way through town, there are many great restaurants here, making Castro a surprisingly culinary destination.

Day 4 Activity

Walk from pier to Plaza de Armas for a short visit and proceed to San Francisco church, the main Catholic church of Chiloé’s capital and rather than the typical style of the other churches of the island, it is Neo-Gothic style.
The church was built by carpenters from Chiloé under supervision from Salvador Sierpe. A few minutes later walk to the Regional Museum which houses a well-organized collection of Huilliche relics, musical instruments, traditional farm implements and Chilota wooden boat models, and exhibits on the evolution of Chiloé’s towns.
Continue downhill to the rich handicraft market to shop and admire the local artisanal work before continuing to the pier.

Day 4 Activity

This excursion provides a glimpse into the history of the small villages in the Castro-Delahue area. We will visit three towns by coach and ferry.
We depart the pier and proceed to Dalcahue, a picturesque village located 20 km north of Castro. Along the way, glimpse the colourful hamlet of Llaullao where we see “tejuelas” (uniquely roofed houses) and a beautiful chapel in a nice setting.
Arrive at the ferry terminal in Dalcahue and board a boat for an 8-minute crossing to the Island of Quinchao. Upon arrival, we head towards Achao, passing through Curaco de Velez. This very small village of approximately 500 inhabitants saw its best days back in the 1850s when cattle ranchers and whalers lived there. The beautiful houses you see today remain as a testament to the past. Also highlighting the village are its black-necked swans, which are visible along the coastal avenue.
About 16 km ahead, we discover the town of Achao, founded as a Jesuit residency in 1743. With almost 2,500 inhabitants, Achao is today alive with boats from all the surrounding islands, making it one of the busiest ports in the area. Highlighting the town is its church, built in 1730 and featuring beautiful baroque imagery. At an agreed time, we head back to Dalcahue, a town that emerged into its present state as a result of the cattle and timber industry booms in the late 19th century. Dalcahue boasts one of the largest and oldest (1750-1790) churches in the area. Following a visit to the church, we commence with the return drive to Castro.

Day 4 Activity

Trek through Chiloe National Park, where hiking trails take you to a great viewpoint with views over Cucao Lake and the Pacific Ocean. Learn about local flora and fauna and the history of the primitive settlements. We will also drive by the village of Cucao and hear about the tsunami that this town suffered in 1960.
Visit the fascinating Chiloe National Park, located 58 km south of Castro, by the Pacific Ocean. We start with a drive from the pier, passing Chonchi town and continue along Huillinco and Cucao Lake on our way to the park.
Throughout this trip, you will learn about the local flora, fauna and the history of the primitive settlements as well as the visit by Charles Darwin in the 1800s. We will also drive by Cucao village and learn about the tsunami that this town suffered in 1960.
When we arrive Chiloe National Park, which is an area of 43,000 hectares, we will visit the Visitor’s Center. Here you will receive instructions and get ready for your wonderful trek through the park.
The start of the trail consists of 450 meters of easy walking up to the first viewpoint, from where we will observe Cucao Lake and the Pacific Ocean. We will continue another 500 meters to reach the starting point of the “Educational El Tepual Trail”. This trail is a circuit of 770 meters on mostly flat terrain, but with many wooden gangplanks and steps along the path. Along the walk, we will see many different types of trees, such as Coihües, Mañios and Cipreses.
Finally, we walk back to the Visitor’s Center (950 meters) to refresh and enjoy an energizing snack before driving back to the pier, where your ship awaits.

Day 5
We continue south, making our way through the fabled waters of Patagonia. When Magellan sailed here in 1520, he used the term ‘patagon’ to describe the indigenous tribes of the region, which he and his expedition believed to be giants of up to 5 metres tall. While we can’t promise you giants, the iconic Andean seascapes of undisturbed nature and spectacular mountain peaks are definitely both great and grand.
We are getting closer to one of the world’s most remote and beautiful places; the province of Última Esperanza, meaning Last Hope. Spanish navigator Juan Ladrillero named it so in 1557 after several failed attempts to reach the Strait of Magellan. You’ll be happy to know that he did go on to successfully find and navigate the strait.
Day 6
The mini-village of Puerto Edén sits on a bay, on the edge of a peninsula, in the middle of a fjord in Bernardo O´Higgins National Park. The comparisons to the Garden of Eden apply more to the park than to the hamlet itself, but, needless to say, this place is hard to get to. While the surrounds are certainly a paradise off the beaten path, there are actually no roads that lead here and Puerto Edén is only accessible by sea.
However, the isolation suits the dozen indigenous Kawéskar people who gave up their canoe-faring nomadic lifestyle to settle here a generation ago. And because of the unusually humid climate and high rainfall, there are no roads around the hamlet either. To move around and visit the small arts and crafts shops, you must use the pedestrian boardwalks that connect the houses and buildings of the 250 people living here.
Day 7-8
Thanks to its proximity to Torres del Paine National Park, Puerto Natales has swapped the sheep from its former agricultural industry for fleece-wearing hikers who stream here for a Patagonian adventure. You’ll see many corrugated tin shops catering to this new clientele, stocking up on all sorts of outdoor clothing and offering an increasingly diverse selection of cuisine.
Over the two days we spend here, you’ll have the option to join an excursion to the park itself or to enjoy the atmosphere and attractions of Puerto Natales. Go for drinks at one of the many quiet bars and chat to locals and other international adventurers. The Last Hope is both bar and gin distillery and reputedly the southernmost distillery in the world. Strolling along the waterfront next to Última Esperanza fjord, you’ll likely take photos at the old pier and a few other monuments dotted on the way.

Day 7-8 Activity

This excursion combines the highlights of the charming town of Puerto Natales with the interesting Milodón Cave, just a few kilometres away.
Splendid views of glacier-capped peaks are assured throughout.
Commencing at the port, a short drive leads to the Plaza de Armas, a pretty, tree-lined square in the centre of town very typical of Chilean small towns with its church, Town Hall (Minicipalidad) and post office clustered around it.
Continue to the Milodon Cave, in 1896, local resident Captain Eberhard found a scrap of skin and some bones in a large cave near his property that were later determined to be from a Milodon, a prehistoric ground sloth. The story of the Milodon was popularized by Bruce Chatwin’s travelogue In Patagonia. Although the Milodon is depicted in a full-size replica at the cave’s entrance, most of the Milodon’s remains were shipped off to London, which means the real attraction is the 30m-high (98-ft.), 200m-deep (656-ft.) cave itself, which has an eerie, shaggy roof and is surrounded by interesting conglomerate rock formations. An interpretative centre with a few Milodon bones and a display showing the geological formation of the cave provides some interesting additional background. There is also a historical display of the indigenous tribes who inhabited this and nearby caves as far back as 12,000 years ago.

This excursion includes an overnight inside the park – ‘the eighth wonder of the world’ – with its impressive scenery and incomparable views. The Torres del Paine National Park covers an area over 242,000 hectares and features a rich geographical diversity of lakes, lagoons, waterfalls, glaciers, hills and peaks. There is always the possibility of seeing varieties of native wildlife in their natural habitat.
DAY 1
Inside the park, the road is surrounded by dozens of lagoons filled with grasses and aquatic birds that richly contrast nearby small hills where flocks of Guanacos graze.
Our first stop inside the park is at Sarmiento Lake.
Afterwards, we continue to Nordenskjold Lake, which bathes the mountainsides of the Paine range in its emerald green light.
Nordenskjold Lake feeds impetuous Salto Grande waterfall which in turns spills into quiet Pehoe Lake. Here, a 45-minute walk provides good opportunities to capture pictures of Salto Grande.
Our journey continues along the Paine River until we reach the Serrano River area – a peaceful and beautiful part of the park.
We will drive to Grey Lake beach to start walking along the shore and observe colourful deep-blue tinted icebergs. Continue to Cerro Castillo for lunch before returning to Puerto Natales.
This programme is designed so that guests spend a night inside the park, ‘the eighth wonder of the world’, surrounded with impressive scenery and incomparable views.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. At agreed time, checkout and departure from the hotel.
The variety of natural beauties of the Torres del Paine National Park will continue to amaze you. Appreciate the most spectacular worldwide Reserve at the end of the world.
The Nordenskjold Lake gives life to the impetuous Salto Grande (big waterfall) forming the quiet Pehoe Lake. You will have a 30 minute walk (400 meters each way) to get closer pictures of the Salto, the waters of the Lake Nordenskjold and the Paine river into the beautiful, turquoise-hued Lake Pehoe.
You’ll start at El Salto Grande, an impressive and spectacular waterfall channelling the waters of Lake Nordenskjold and the Paine River into the beautiful, turquoise-hued Lake Pehoé. Your senses will be awakened by the roar of the falling water, the scents and smells of nature and the kaleidoscope of colours on display.
You then follow the trail alongside the mountain giving you stunning views of the legendary Los Cuernos, known as ‘The Horns of Patagonia’. Their jagged outline and granite peaks are an awe-inspiring sight and this is a view you won’t forget in a hurry.

On our way from the pier to Torres del Paine National Park there are stunning views in every direction. Torres del Paine National Park covers an area of 242,242 hectares/935 square miles, featuring an outstanding combination of lakes, lagoons, waterfalls, glaciers, hills and peaks where you can observe different life forms in their natural habitats.
Inside the park, the road is surrounded by dozens of lagoons covered with grasses and aquatic birds, contrasting with small hills where herds of guanacos pasture. Turquoise lakes, waterfalls and mountains covered by ice are the predominant landscape inside the park.
Farther along, we encounter the Salto Grande (big waterfall) which forms quiet Pehoe Lake. Note that the visit to Salto Grande is subject to weather conditions.
After a photo stop we depart the park and return to Puerto Natales, driving across the Patagonia’s deep pampas (Patagonian steppes).

Torres del Paine National Park
Day 7-8 Activity

Spectacular views abound in every direction. Torres del Paine National Park covers an area of 242.242 hectares and features an outstanding combination of lakes, lagoons, waterfalls, glaciers, hills, and peaks, as well as the possibility to observe various kinds of wildlife in their natural habitat.
We depart the pier and drive to Torres del Paine National Park.
Inside the park, the road is surrounded by dozens of lagoons filled with grasses and aquatic birds, contrasting nearby small hills where flocks of guanacos pasture. After passing the Serrano River entrance, the road becomes rocky and traverses many cliffs and pampas (Patagonian steppes) before we arrive in the Grey Lake area to admire the magnificent contrast of mountain, lake, icebergs, and Grey Glacier.
We will drive to Grey Lake beach and start walking along the shore to enjoy views of the icebergs with their deep blue colours. Further along, we encounter the Salto Grande (big waterfall), which forms quiet Pehoe Lake. The visit to Salto Grande is subject to weather conditions. After some time taking photos, we leave the park behind and return to Puerto Natales, driving across Patagonia’s deep pampas.

Torres del Paine – Grey Hike
Day 7-8 Activity

This programme is designed to give you the best of both worlds. Explore Torres del Paine by both coach and foot. The eighth wonder of the world, Torres del Paine National Park, covers an area over 242.000 hectares and consists of a rich combination of lakes, lagoons, waterfalls, glaciers, hills and peaks. It is possible to observe many different forms of life here in their natural state.
This excursion begins early in the morning from Puerto Natales, 60 kms away. We make a technical stop in the village of Cerro Castillo, where there are possibilities for shopping, enjoying a coffee or just taking a break.
Continuing the trip toward Torres del Paine National Park, visitors will be able to enjoy the most diverse landscapes, such as the Magellanic deciduous forest and the vast Patagonian steppe (virtually desert) dominated by wind and aridity.
On the way it is possible to find two species of local fauna, the Patagonian guanaco (South American camel) and relative of the llama, and the endemic lesser Rhea (Ñandú), relative of the African Ostrich.
Once we get to the park, which is a biosphere reserve with a surface over 242.000 hectares, the landscape changes drastically. The surroundings transform into dozens of lakes populated by marine birds, and a backdrop of steep granite peaks. Turquoise lakes, waterfalls and mountains covered by ice are predominant inside the park.
We will stop for lunch at one of the hosterias (an inn or hostel) in the park (depending on availability).
After lunch, our trip through the park continues. An approximately 90-minute walk will take you towards the Salto Grande (big waterfall) and the Mirador Cuernos Lookout, which provides a spectacular view out over the water and mountains.

Hiking in Torres del Paine
Day 9
Glacial ice once scoured its way through the landscapes, creating the deep and beautiful Chilean fjords and canals and the tall mountains that surround them. Even though the area seems almost untouched by humans, these canals have been used for fishing and hunting by the canoe-faring indigenous people for centuries.
Now you can enjoy the serenity of this maze of waterways between islands, mountains and glaciers. If time and weather permit, you might be taken on a scenic cruising of the fjords aboard our small explorer boats or join a landing ashore. Keep your eyes on the sky to look for birds following the ship. In the water, you might get to see dolphins and even whales.
Day 10-11
In the morning, we will sail through the scenic Beagle Channel, where you can watch for rare, endemic Peale’s dolphin and other wildlife. Once we exit the channel, we journey down to Cape Horn. This headland on Hornos Island was discovered in 1616 by the Dutchman Willem Schouten, who named it Kaap Hoorn after the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands. The waters around the cape are typically choppy with strong wind and large waves and therefore rarely favourable for landings. If, however, the weather allows us to land on the island and go up to the cape, it will surely be something to remember.
When we enter the Drake Passage, our Expedition Team will continue their lectures, providing food for thought to further prepare you for your adventure ahead. You will learn how to make your visit in Antarctica as safe and sustainable as possible by reviewing key IAATO guidelines. The team might cover the sterilisation procedure for our special shore boots or why we always vacuum our clothes and backpack before we go on landings in Antarctica. For better photos, our onboard photographer will tell you how to adjust the white balance and when best to reduce the exposure. Stay active in the gym or soothe in the sauna but don’t forget to scan the horizon out on deck or in the Explorer Lounge for signs of that first iceberg.
Day 12-18
This is the final frozen frontier; an unspoilt, vast, white desert teeming with life at the bottom of the world. Majestic mountains rise up from the icy sea, coated in thick snow. Glaciers creep across the landscape, cracking and calving icebergs along the coast. The scenery is almost silent, save for the shrill of lovesick penguins, splashes from courting seals, and the sound of crumbling ice. The 46 species of birds living here, like terns, petrels and jaegers may also take up a lot of your attention.
During the seven days we spend around the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula, we will likely go ashore at several places, allowing you to experience the region’s wildlife and landscapes first-hand. The Expedition Team will lead on landings where they will create a perimeter for you to move around freely at your own speed. They will also direct ice-cruising in our small expedition boats to tour icebergs and glaciers from a safe distance. Added to that, there are sometimes optional activities like kayaking, camping and snowshoeing which you may be lucky enough to join in on. You can also take part in a varied choice of Citizen Science projects like photographing whales and collecting water samples. Uploading your photos to a global database helps scientists around the world to study migration patterns and microbiology. You will get an even better understanding of the fragile ecosystem of Antarctica when we study the samples in the Science Center.
As outlined in the Antarctic Treaty, Antarctica is dedicated to peace, science and tourism. That’s why we adhere to very strict environmental guidelines in this area. We are the foreign element here, so it is important to make as little impact as possible. The wildlife is used to the ice and cold weather, but not human interference. We want to leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but pictures! In fact, in many of the areas we visit, we even wipe out our footprints to prevent penguins falling into them and getting stuck. Day 19-21
Inspired. That’s how many of our guests feel after seven fascinating and unforgettable days exploring Antarctica. You, and undoubtfully also the memory card in your camera, will be filled with memorable moments that will stay with you forever.
MS Fram will turn around, point north and begin to take you safely back across the Drake Passage and on through the Beagle Channel. The Expedition Team will continue their lectures in the Science Center and also recap the experiences from your cruise. If you start to feel a little sad your cruise is coming to an end, that’s absolutely normal. But there is still plenty of time to enjoy yourself. Go on a foodie frenzy in the onboard restaurants, savouring all your favourite dishes one last time. Count the stars from the hot tub on the observation deck and add your new friends to your preferred social media channel.
Day 22
When we arrive in Punta Arenas in the morning, your cruise has come to an end. We transfer you to the airport, where you will fly to the capital, Santiago de Chile. If you are in no rush to head back home, we wholeheartedly recommend extending your trip to enjoy the many delights of the Chilean capital. We also recommend extending your vacation with a post-programme to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Easter Island, where you can, among other things, try to make sense of the mysterious statues of giant heads.
Even as you’ll have to say farewell to the ship, the Captain, crew and the Expedition Team, you don’t have to say goodbye to adventure. When one chapter closes, another opens and there are more expedition cruises and destinations to explore.
More than the photos you’ll take home with you, we hope that what you’ll cherish the most are the magical moments you experienced on this expedition; moments not behind the camera lens, but just as vivid in your mind and heart. May Antarctica continue to inspire you long after your adventure here.
