The Experience

On this kayak expedition we focus on the northern parts of Isfjorden. There is less boat traffic in this area, and we can paddle undisturbed past huge glaciers such as the spectacular Sveabreen. The area teems with birdlife, and we can see rare Polar ora whilst soaking up the fascinating local history on land. We will be able to see culturally significant areas from the mining and exploration eras, as well as from hunting and trapping life. If the weather is difficult, we will go trekking in the beautiful area surrounding the camps

Practical Information

This trip requires the participants to be physically fit and previous paddling experience is an advantage. We use both single kayaks and steady double kayaks on this expedition. There are a set number of kayaks, so participants must be prepared to alternate between paddling single and double. Our guides are experienced kayak paddlers and will at all times ensure the groups safety. Participants will be asked to assist with the polar bear watch during the night.

Day wise Itinerary

Day 1

Oslo to Longyearbyen

Your expedition begins with your arrival to Oslo airport, where our flight is ready to take you to the northernmost settlement on earth. Once at capital of Svalbard, Longyearbyen, we will transfer to your accommodation. If you arrive early, make sure to explore this town and mingle with its friendly locals, before enjoying an overnight.

Day 2

Longyearbyen to Postbreen

The expedition leader will meet the participants in the reception at the Coal Miners’ Cabins at 10:00 am, for a welcome meeting and briefing. From here the group will head to the expedition stores, to go through the equipment, find appropriate dry-suits and so forth.

Following a break to grab some lunch and last minute shopping, the group will meet again at 3:00 pm for the transfer to Kapp Wærn on the north bank of the Isfjord. From here we will paddle around the local area, and find a suitable place to camp.

Day 3-6

Towards Sveabreen

After a communal breakfast we will get our gear together and head into the wilderness. We will paddle from Kapp Wærn towards Coraøya, into the Ekmannsfjord, past Flintholmen and towards the impressive Sveabreen, with its towering glacier face. During the tour we will often stop to take pictures, and to marvel in all the amazing sites that surround us. Lunch stops will be on shore, where we can stretch our legs and replete our water stores. Following the break, we will get back into our kayaks, ready to explore new areas before setting a new camp. The plan is to cover 10 - 20 kilometers per day.

Day 7

Wahlenberg Glacier to Longyearbyen

On our final day of paddling we will enter Yoldiabukta, and head past the mighty Wahlenberg Glacier, with its blue-white icebergs. The Polarcirkel boats will arrive to collect us around lunch, and we will cross the fjord once more for the return to civilisation. In Longyearbyen we will pack away our equipment, before enjoying a farewell dinner with the team.
