We call our galley ‘Norway’s coastal kitchen’ because the food we serve comes from the freshest, most delicious produce found on the Norwegian coast, delivered fresh everyday by local purveyors as we stop by different ports. Day 1

Bergen - Embarkation

Your voyage starts in Bergen, a city surrounded by seven mountains. Before departure you may wish to explore this cultural gateway to the fjords. Bergen was founded in 1070 AD, and was the capital of Norway for several years. The city is a central point for Norwegian travel, and has retained a great deal of local character and history. One example of this is the historic UNESCO-listed Bryggen district with colourful wharfs that date back to the 14th century. Take a stroll around this charming and compact city, spend some time in one of the outdoor cafés and restaurants, enjoy a trip on the Fløibanen Funicular or visit the famous fish market.

After embarkation, we invite you to enjoy our tasty dinner buffet, based on the best ingredients from the coast. We sail north from Bergen along the Hjeltefjord, the same route the Vikings once plied to the Shetland Islands and beyond. We are heading to the high north. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing as you admire the spectacular landscapes, either from deck or in our panorama lounges.

If you wake up early the next day, you have the chance to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Nordfjord, followed by a delicious breakfast. As we sail past the West Cape, we are out on the open sea. The ship then navigates through skerries and islands before reaching Ålesund.

Distinguished by its numerous spires, towers and highly-ornate buildings, Ålesund is a town renowned for its beautiful art nouveau architecture. It owes this to a devastating fire that burned a large proportion of the city to the ground in 1904. The entire town was subsequently rebuilt in the fashionable style of the time, art nouveau. If you like marine life, join us on a visit to Atlanterhavsparken - one of Northern Europe’s largest salt-water aquariums. The tour includes a visit to the open-air pool to see the resident penguins. After visiting Atlanterhavsparken, we continue onwards and upwards to Mount Aksla where you will get an amazing panorama of the area.

In the summer months, we set course for the spectacular UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord passing sheer, 800 metre cliffs and impressive waterfalls en route. In autumn, we explore Hjørundfjord, situated amidst the majestic Sunnmøre Alps. Its seclusion and unspoiled natural landscape are what give this fjord its special character: far from the tourist bustle, taking passengers past steep rock walls, green meadows, lonely mountain farms and small villages.

Molde is known as the ‘city of roses’. This attractive coastal city also has a wonderful view to 222 mountain peaks, called ‘the Molde panorama’. Enjoy discovering the town on your own or with one of our excursions.

A Taste Of Norway

Enjoy “a taste of Norway” and see places that have fascinated visitors for centuries. After arriving Hjørundfjord by sea, a tender boat takes you to the tiny village Urke. From here, we go by bus through what is considered Norway’s narrowest valley, Norangsdalen. Because of its shape and location, Norangsdalen is often closed during winter. In 1908 there was a large landslide that dammed a lake named Lyngstølvatnet and submerged an ancient settlement that you can see beneath the surface of the water.

We also visit the historic Hotel Union Øye, one of the most distinct hotels in all of Europe. Built in 1891, the hotel provides elegant comfort in magnificent natural surroundings and has been a favorite of European royalty, writers and lovers for generations.

Mountain Hike In The Hjørundfjord

Join a spectacular mountain hike in the Hjørundfjord region. From the top is a panoramic view of steep mountain peaks rising directly from the fjords to heights reaching 5,000 ft above sea level.  The hike starts on an old farm road and continues on a tractor path. It’s a steep climb towards the top, and the last 1,600 ft you climb an old stone stairway.

At the top you are rewarded with an absolutely amazing view. If you follow a path farther up the hill, you can see the village of Sæbø on the other side of the fjord. At the top you can also visit an abandoned bear cave. Before descending, we take a coffee break in Leknes valley, overlooking the village Urke, the fjord and the beautiful mountains. We take the same farm road back down, and visit the local grocer before ending our excursion at Kaihuset Café.

Geiranger With Trollstigen Pass

Get ready for exploring the world-famous Geirangerfjord, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, wild waterfalls and lush vegetation. We first drive from Geiranger, up the incredibly steep Ørneveien (Eagle Road), which tops out at 620 meters above sea level. At the summit is Ørnesvingen viewpoint and a waterfall. The vista here encompasses Geiranger, Geirangerfjord, with its sheer mountainsides plunging into the sea, and the “Seven Sisters” waterfalls. We then drive along Eidsvatnet lake and proceed to Eidsdal, where we ferry across the fjord to Linge.

Back on dry land, we head again for the mountains, stopping en route at the impressive Gudbrandsjuvet (Gudbrands Gorge). We then drive down Trollstigen (The Troll’s Ladder), a 66-mile-long stretch of road with dizzying views of abrupt mountainsides, precipitous waterfalls, deep fjords and fertile valleys. Trollstigen descends out of the mountains on 11 hairpin turns at a 9 percent gradient and is surrounded by lofty peaks appropriately dubbed Kongen (the King), Dronningen (the Queen) and Bispen (the Bishop). At the bottom, it’s time for a hot drink and snack before continuing to the gentler terrain of Romsdalsfjord. We wrap up our day with dinner in the City of Roses, Molde, before embarking on our waiting Hurtigruten ship.

In Hjørundfjord, we go ashore in the small village of Urke and travel by bus through the narrow Norangsdalen valley. Then we enjoy beautiful Geirangerfjord from a ferry, before travelling up into the mountains for breathtaking views at Flydalsjuvet viewpoint in Geiranger. Some of Norway’s most popular travel photos are taken here.

We continue up Eagle Road, the steepest stretch of road up the mountainside from Geiranger. We take the ferry from Eidsdal to Linge and continue to the village of Stordal where we stop for coffee and a snack. We end the day in Ålesund, a town best known for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. Here, we do some short sightseeing and admire the view from the town’s mountain, Aksla, before embarking on the ship.

Hike With A Visit To A Shieling

Come along on this delightful hike to a shepherd´s shelter where our welcoming hosts describe life on the farm in the old days. In the past, farms in the village were very small, so it was important to utilize outlying areas for summer grazing. Every year, the cows were moved to a meadow near the shelter where they grazed and were milked morning and evening.

The grazing meadow was so far from the village that it was necessary to build houses for the milk maidens. The old farmhouses at Haukås were restored in the 1990s, and are reminders of a bygone era. Our hosts demonstrate how to use some of the farm equipment, and you get to try carrying milk pails and churning butter. You also get time to explore the site on your own, and to taste the local delicacies. After the visit we follow the road on the other side of the valley, and stop at the local grocery store.

Welcome to Ålesund! We start our day with a visit to the town mountain Aksla. From here, you get a spectacular view of the beautiful town center, the archipelago and the Sunnmøre Alps.

Capture some photos before we continue to Atlanterhavsparken, one of Northern Europe’s largest salt-water aquariums and an architectural gem integrated into the shoreline. Here, you get an opportunity to enjoy close encounters with some of the marine life that can be found in and around the coastal waters of Norway. Visit the open-air pool to see the resident penguins, try feeding the catfish and get a taste of hot catfish cake.

Ålesund today is a partner in the Réseau Art Nouveau Network, a European web of cooperation created in 1999 for the study, protection and development of Art Nouveau.

Our tour includes a visit to Jugendstilsenteret, a museum and national center of Art Nouveau housed in a former pharmacy built in 1907. The museum features everything from modern multimedia presentations to original interiors, and provides a comprehensive insight into Art Nouveau history. Afterwards we stroll by the picturesque fishing port of Brosundet, Apotekertorget square with its iconic fisherman statue, and Ålesund´s attractive shopping street.

We also stop by an art gallery, owned and operated by Ålesund-born artist Helge Bjørnsen, who gives you a complimentary signed watercolor print of your choice. Don´t miss this opportunity to explore one of Norway´s most elegant and beautiful cities.

Few large cities have managed to preserve their intimacy as effectively as Norway’s third largest city, Trondheim. Viking king, Olav Tryggvason, founded this ancient city as early as 997. Join our optional excursion to Norway’s national shrine, Nidaros Cathedral, the country´s only Gothic-style cathedral built over the burial place of St. Olav, Norway’s patron saint. Here you can marvel at the cathedral’s incredible architectural details and exquisite works of art.

During spring and summer, we continue to the Ringve Museum of Musical History, where the history of Norway’s music is brought to life. This beautiful manor house is surrounded by a wonderful botanical garden, and provides fantastic views of both the city and the fjord.

From September to May you can experience Trondheim in a vintage carriage on the world’s northernmost tram for a unique sightseeing tour.

You can also explore Trondheim from sea level in a kayak along the river Nid all year, or experience the city on a bicycle and try out the world’s only bicycle lift from April to September. Join the Expedition team for a hike to discover more of the surroundings of Trondheim.

In the afternoon, the ship sets a northwest course, passing the beautiful Kjeungskjær lighthouse and numerous charming islets and rocky outcrops. After passing through the narrow Stokksund, the ship heads towards charming Rørvik.

Trondheim is an ancient city, founded by Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997. Today we explore two of Trondheim’s main attractions.

First, we visit the Ringve Museum of Musical History, where your enthusiastic tour guide will bring the history of Norway’s music to life. This beautiful manor house was the childhood home of Norwegian naval hero Petter Wessel Tordenskiold, and is surrounded by a wonderful botanical garden. The Museum is conveniently located just outside Trondheim, and so represents an idyllic spot to enjoy the beautiful views of both the city and the fjord.

Next, the bus takes you to Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s national shrine. The cathedral is built over the burial place of St. Olav, Norway’s patron saint. Here you can admire its incredible architectural details and exquisite works of art. After a guided tour of the cathedral, you have some free time to explore*.

Trondheim is a large city by Norwegian standards, but has managed to preserve much of the intimacy and charm of a small town. It is also a city full of contrasts, with its medieval cathedral, colourful wharves and beautiful red-painted wooden bridge dating back to 1861 on one hand, and its modern sports facilities, world-renowned education and research community, and lively nightlife on the other. A local guide tells you all about Trondheim´s highlights on a coach tour through its streets and boroughs, including a short stop at Utsikten (the View) to admire the city from above.

Our adventure continues to the impressive Nidaros Cathedral, built over the burial site of St. Olav (Tryggvason), the patron saint of Norway. Construction of this enormous Gothic structure with its countless details and adornments began as early as 1070. You quickly see why many describe Nidaros as the most beautiful religious building in Norway*. At the end of the tour, you receive a complimentary book about Nidarosdomen to take home as a memory.

Norway’s first capital, Trondheim, was founded in 997 by Viking king, Olav Tryggvason, who gave Norway Christianity and Trondheim its original name, Nidaros. Our guided stroll through Trondheim starts at the harbour, largely built and developed during the second half of the 19th century. We then proceed to Stiftsgården, the royal residence in Trondheim, and on to the market square to take a closer look at the statue of the city’s founder, Olav Tryggvason. From here, we walk to Nidaros Cathedral, Norway´s national shrine and a Gothic masterpiece.

We explore the world’s northernmost medieval cathedral before crossing the old city bridge over the River Nid. The ornate gateway on the red-painted bridge is known to locals as `the portal of happiness´. We now stroll through the area called Bakklandet, which has preserved its charming 19thcentury wooden architecture. Originally an industrial part of the city, Bakklandet´s old factories have been renovated into attractive housing integrated with boutiques and gourmet restaurants. Here you also find the world’s only bicycle lift – up to the top of a steep hill called Brubakken. Come along and be a part of this enjoyable tour through one of Norway´s most delightful cities.

Trondheim has put a lot of effort into becoming the most bicycle-friendly community in Norway. The city has installed many red-painted bicycle lanes through its centre to heighten the visibility and growing presence of cyclists on its byways. This guided bicycle excursion takes you from the ship, along the fjord, and across the city´s new bike bridge with great views of Munkholmen, Trondheim’s medieval fortress island.

From here, we cycle through the Ila district and along the River Nid, which provides views of majestic Nidaros Cathedral and the city´s colourful old warehouses. We also wheel into the historic Bakklandet district, where we try out the world’s first and only bicycle lift, called `Trampe´, that pulls us up a steep hill called Brobakken. We additionally stop for coffee and pastry at one of the many cosy cafes in the area. Heading back to the ship, we pass through the historic and recently modernised Solsiden district, the site of a former shipyard and now public area popular with the locals.

Established in 1789, Hammerfest is one of the world´s northernmost towns, with a lot of unique history to share. This excursion starts with a visit to the Museum of Reconstruction of Finnmark and Northern Troms. The museum features an impressive exhibition about the impact World War II had on Northern Norway and the massive post-war efforts to rebuild the region. Our next stop is the Meridian Column, a UNESCO World Heritage site commemorating the first official measurement of the earth´s exact size and shape.

From here, we have a spectacular view of the liquid natural gas (LNG) refinery on the nearby island of Melkøya, the processing site for natural gas produced from the Snøhvit offshore field in the Barents Sea. The town of Hammerfest has a long, eventful history. Back in 1891, for example, it was the first town in northern Europe to get electric street lighting run on hydropower. As we head up Mount Salen, you learn more about Hammerfest’s unique history dating back to the Viking Age. Atop Salen we enjoy great views over the town and our waiting ship.

It´s easy to imagine yourself paddling through the past as we glide by colourful old warehouses, medieval Nidaros Cathedral and the formidable Kristiansten Fortress. We also explore the river´s smaller channels near the harbour and see sights that you can only discover by kayak.

The River Nid is also a good place to fish for trout and even salmon. Every year salmon weighing more than 20 kg are caught in the river´s lower reaches. This expedition is not about action-packed adventure, it´s about sightseeing and contemplation.

Today we cross the Arctic Circle! This invisible line is situated at 66 degrees 33 minutes north and marks the border to the Arctic Region. In summer, this means 24-hour daylight - often referred to as the ‘midnight sun’. During winter, being above this latitude provides the best chances for experiencing the Northern Lights. Even if you aren’t awake to see the Arctic Circle, the captain makes sure that the occasion is a memorable event. If you are sailing in Arctic waters for the first time, you can participate in a daytime Arctic Circle ceremony on deck.

Near Ørnes, you find Svartisen, Norway’s second largest glacier. Join us for a trip to the Svartisen Tourist Centre in summer, where you can admire the beauty of this enigmatic world of ice and visit a moose farm. Afterwards, the journey continues along the beautiful coast of Helgeland to Bodø, where you re-join the ship. In Bodø, you can join an adventure in harmony with nature, eagles and the deep blue sea. We head to Saltstraumen in a RIB, where you witness the world’s most powerful tidal current. On this exciting journey through wild landscape, there is also a good chance to observe sea eagles.

Majestic, beautiful Lofoten
Later this afternoon, the sight of the 1,000 m high Lofoten Wall appears on the horizon. Tucked between majestic granite cliffs and white sandy beaches, Lofoten is an experience that is out of the ordinary. The charms of the Lofoten Islands are revealed in the small, picturesque fishing villages with their bohemian ambience. Take a stroll between stockfish racks and ‘rorbuer’, the traditional fisherman’s huts.

At Stamsund, join a historical journey to the Lofotr Viking Museum, where you are invited into the chieftain’s house, a full-size reconstruction featuring exhibits of finds dating back to the Viking Age. The chieftain and the lady of the house invite you to join them for a real Viking meal in the banquet hall, providing a taste of the Viking Age, complete with traditional food, drinks, costumes, singing and dancing.

Between Stamsund and Svolvær, you have the chance to experience life on a herb and cheese farm in Lofoten, or visit the Lofoten’s only craft brewery, situated in an old fish landing facility in Svolvær.

Hunting the Northern Lights
In winter, crossing the Arctic Circle is when the hunt for the Northern Light begins. We celebrate the event by presenting a multimedia show, ‘The Magic Light, Aurora Borealis’, featuring pictures, words and music. As we sail through the narrow Raftsund, we stop at the entrance to Trollfjord. Here we serve freshly made fish cakes out on deck. You also hear the story of ‘The battle of Trollfjord’, which took place here in the winter of 1890. If you look closely, you might see trolls up in the steep mountains. Or you might not.

Svartisen is Norway’s second largest glacier, and the lowest glacier in mainland Europe. This makes it easy accessible for hikes.  In Ørnes, we enter a bus that will take us on a guided tour through beautiful scenery to the small village of Holandsvik. Here, we enter a boat for a 10-minute ride across the fjord.

Upon arrival at Svartisen, you may visit a moose farm and get close to Europe’s largest land living animal. An adult male can grow more than 2 meters tall and weigh between 400-500kg.The guides will take you on a tour where you get a chance to get close and maybe even feed the moose.

At the Svartisen Tourist Center, you can admire the beauty of this enigmatic ice world while enjoying a warm drink and the center’s varied buffet of delicious cakes. Afterwards, you continue your journey along the beautiful coast of Helgeland back to Bodø. On the way, you will pass Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest tidal current.

Jules Verne wrote about Saltstraumen in his famous novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Edgar Allen Poe penned a whole story about the whirlpools in A Descent into the Maelstrom, and Herman Melville described Saltstraumen through his character Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. No wonder. Saltstraumen is the world’s most powerful tidal current. Four times a day, some 13 billion cubic feet of water are forced in and out through a passage that is 150 metres/490 ft wide and 31 metres/100 ft deep.

The conditions cause such an intense churning and downward pull that it can be dangerous to sail through Saltstraumen outside of specific windows of time. On this tour, we sit safely and comfortably in sturdy rubber boats with high-powered outboard motors, operated by highly experienced and knowledgeable pilots. There is also a good chance to observe sea eagles during the trip. You can also see parts of the Caledonian Fold Belt, one of the world´s oldest mountain ranges dating back more than 250 million years. This is a day packed full of exciting nature adventure.

We start the tour with a sightseeing through the town of Bodø, the second largest town in the northern part of Norway. Bodø has 50.000 inhabitants and lies just north of the Arctic Circle. We continue through a fantastic landscape on our way to Saltstraumen – the strongest tidal current in the world, with water speeds reaching 22 knots.

Up to 400,000,000 cubic meters of seawater forces its way through a 3-kilometre wide strait every six hours. Saltstraumen has existed for about three thousand years. After you have admired Saltstraumen, you will get a box of salt flakes produced here. It takes 48 hours to separate the unique minerals from the water. Just like snow crystals, salt crystals are unique. Water temperature, season and humidity at Saltstraumen puts a footprint on each salt flake. Take the salt with you back home, and impress your friends with an arctic addition to your cooking.

The original Viking chieftain’s longhouse at Borg was built in about 500 AD and was inhabited until around 900 AD. Smell the tar that used to seal the timbers, feel the history inside the walls, and taste the food. The chieftain and lady of the house invite you to join them for an authentic and delicious Viking meal served with mead in the banquet hall. Experience the magic and excitement as the host Vikings make sacrifices to the Norse Gods, praying for good health, prosperity, a righteous death, and that the sun return to avert Ragnarok, the end of the world. Bridges were especially important sacrificial sites because they were seen as a threshold between the living and the dead. Viking settlements and burial sites were almost always close to water or connected by a bridge. After the Viking meal and sacrificial ceremony, we travel by coach to Svolvær and re-join the ship.

After starting in Stamsund, our first stop is a photo stop at Torvdalshalsen. We then continue to Kabelvåg, the oldest fishing village in the Lofoten Islands and formerly the largest. It was here that Lofoten’s commercial fisheries started more than 1,000 years ago. In Kabelvåg, we visit Gallery Espolin, with the largest collection of works made by beloved artist Kaare Espolin Johnson, known for his depictions of the sea, Lofoten and the hard lives of fishermen.

Close to the gallery is Lofoten Museum where you can learn about the history of the local fishermen. Here you experience an authentic 19th-century setting, with the former village owner`s residence, fishermen`s cabins, a general store, boathouses with traditional wooden boats and a garden. Our last stop is Vågan Church in Kabelvåg, also known as Lofoten Cathedral. The church was built in 1898 in the Gothic Revival style and is one of Norway´s largest with close to 1,200 seats.

Aalan Farms is operated by the Åland family who supply Hurtigruten ships along the coast with teas and tasty organic cheeses year round. It is the only local Hurtigruten food supplier that opens its gates to visiting ship passengers during a voyage. Here, you see, smell, touch and learn about real life on a farm in the far north of Norway. The Aalans show and tell us about food production, animal husbandry, daily work routines and how they spend their leisure time. We also taste their many varieties of cheeses, herbs and other products made from scratch. Be sure and buy some for a savoury snack later. Get ready for a day full of exciting activities, whatever the season! During the morning hours, we briefly dock at Risøyhamn, Harstad and Finnsnes. The ship then continues to Tromsø, `Capital of the Arctic´, for a prolonged stay. Many epic Arctic expeditions used Tromsø as a starting point. Join our `Polar History Walk´ in winter to learn more about the explorers and Arctic hunters, and to taste beer made at the world´s northernmost brewery.

In winter and spring, you can complete your stay in Tromsø with a thrilling husky dog sledge ride. On this mini polar expedition, the huskies pull you over the frozen landscape while you enjoy stunning views of the ocean, mountains and open plateaus. During the polar night, the only light comes from headlamps, the starry sky, and, if we’re lucky, the magical Northern Lights. Why not test your coordination skills and have some winter fun by joining a cross-country skiing or snowshoeing adventure or go deep-sea fishing on an Arctic fjord.

If you want to experience peace and tranquillity on the sea, why not join us for a kayaking excursion in summer? Paddle in the waters off the Tromsø coastline with the mountains as a stunning backdrop. This is a great way to silently glide through these pristine waters and get close to marine wildlife.

Surrounded by towering mountains, Tromsø is nicknamed Paris of the North. This remarkably cosmopolitan city in the Arctic has a fascinating history. It has been the starting point for numerous polar expeditions in the Arctic Ocean, it served briefly as Norway´s seat of government in 1940, and has been a destination for timber transport from Russian rivers. Today Tromsø is a vibrant small metropolis with a rich cultural life. It is also the centre of research and education in the North.

Our tour begins with a ride with the city´s famous cable car up to the mountain ledge, Storsteinen (421 metres/1,377 ft above sea level). From here, you can marvel at spectacular panoramic views of Tromsø and the surrounding islands, mountains and fjords. Take a short walk around the mountain plateau, or enjoy something to eat or drink at Fjellstua restaurant. We also visit the Polaria centre, which features an Arctic aquarium, seal pool, educational displays and a panoramic cinema. Before hopping aboard our sledges and letting the team of huskies pull us over the frozen terrain, we change into proper clothing and footwear. Bundle up, sit back and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding polar sea and surrounding mountains. During the polar night under clear skies the only light we see emanates from the stars, the moon and occasionally the Northern Lights.

During winter we light up the sledge ride with headlamps. In spring, the sun is back, the climate is milder and the days are longer. After the ride we invite you into a Sámi lavvo (teepee) to relax, warm yourself by the open fire and sip a hot drink. Tromsø Wilderness Centre on Kvaløya Island is situated in a scenic area with views of the ocean and mountains. Here you will meet more than 250 huskies and puppies. The center’s founder, Tove Sørensen, counts over 30 years of experience with dog sledging racing. Her participation in the Idiatrod, the world longest dog sled race was honored with the “Most Inspirational Musher” Award and she is the first woman ever to start more than 20 times in the world second longest race, Finnmarksløpet. On this tour, you can learn about the world of competitive dog sledding, Husky breeding and care and even see a movie about her journey through Finnmarksløpet.

Afterwards you may join the Wilderness Centre’s guide in exploring the plant and bird life around the centre, before meeting back in the traditional Sámi lavvo (tent) for a hot drink and a slice of cake.

Polar History Walk

You start the tour by meeting your guide on the pier and then walking along the shore to the Polar Museum. On the way you pass a statue of the great polar explorer Roald Amundsen, a hunting monument and Tromsø market square, where you get a wonderful view of the Arctic Cathedral. The Polar Museum is located in an old customs house built in the 1830s and features exhibits from Norway’s proud and extensive polar history; including numerous Arctic Ocean hunting expeditions for polar bears, seals, whales and walrus over the ensuing centuries. We also see a film about the polar region made by the Arctic hunters.

Our tour continues along the main street to Ølhallen, Tromsø’s oldest pub, which was a popular meeting place for fishermen, hunters and polar explorers. Here, you can taste beer from the world’s northernmost brewery, Mack, whilst one of the locals tells stories about the old days.

Once you’ve picked up a few basic skills from our experienced ski instructors, we take you skiing along flat terrain, most of which on prepared trails. Take in the beautiful scenery as you gently ski along the top of Tromsøya Island, just a short drive from Tromsø city centre. First, we teach you some fundamental ski techniques, from how to get your skis on and off, getting back up after a fall, to gliding across a completely flat area. As you become more accustomed to the skis and gain more confidence, the instructors teach you additional techniques along the route, so that by the end of the tour, you may want to challenge yourself on small hills. After our cross-country ski trek, we take a break where you are served a hot drink and a traditional Norwegian snack called lefse.

The tour starts with a short bus ride through a winter landscape of birch and spruce forests to the top of Tromsøya Island. Equipped with modern snowshoes, you easily walk on the snow, breathing in the crisp air and experiencing Norway´s frozen winter landscape like a local. Follow your guide through the forest and into a clearing, where you can help light the bonfire and then warm yourself by the blaze.

The guide shares knowledge about the surrounding nature, and interesting insights about traditional folklore, the local area and everyday life in Tromsø. Just when you thought it couldn´t get any better, you hop aboard a toboggan and speed down a snowy hill, laughing gleefully like a child again. Enjoy magnificent sub-Arctic landscape as we cross the 71st parallel on our journey towards North Cape, one of the northernmost points on the European continent. In summer, you may see herds of grazing reindeer and small camps belonging to the indigenous Sámi people.

After a brief and early stop in Hammerfest we arrive in Havøysund where you can disembark for an overland RIB expedition, where you will see the North Cape from the sea. Then you go ashore to visit the northernmost fishing village in the world, before a bus takes you to the North Cape where you can enjoy the spectacular view.

The ship arrives in Honningsvåg, the gateway to the spectacular North Cape. An optional excursion to the North Cape plateau puts you at 71°10'21´N, only 2,000 km away from the geographic North Pole. Standing on top the 307-metre high North Cape plateau imparts a sublime sense of being at the end of the world. Nearby is one of the world's most exciting nature reserves, Gjesværstappan. Join a bird-watching safari to experience Finnmark's largest flock of puffins, as well as large numbers of kittiwakes. During the nesting season, this area is teeming with life, and mighty sea eagles hover above in search of prey. Meanwhile guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, arctic skuas, northern fulmars, brünnich's guillemots, and the large northern gannet fill the air with a cacophony of shrieks and screeches.

If you want to learn more about local life in this remote region, join the fishing village visit that takes you through the island of Magerøya´s fantastic scenery to the fishing communities of Kamøyvær and Skarsvåg. Along the way, your guide tells you about the area´s nature, local culture and history.

Sailing north
The ship then continues north, sailing into the heartland of the indigenous Sámi people. We pass their ancient sacred site, the rock formation Finnkirka, as we approach our next stop, the fishing village Kjøllefjord. Here you have the opportunity to learn more about the Sámi people, as well as to explore the wonderful landscape in summer and autumn. Learn about Sámi traditions and their way of life, and hear traditional Sámi joiking (song).

In winter, you can join us on an unforgettable snowmobile trip to one of Europe's most extreme and exciting natural areas. Along the way, guides tell you about the Sámi people, the geographic and climatic conditions, life on the Finnmark coast, and how the local population effectively utilises nature during both the summer and winter seasons. Experience snow-clad valleys, fresh winter air and perhaps the mesmerizing Northern Lights in the clear, starry sky. 'Sámi Autumn' is an excursion where you can learn about the Arctic natural 'pantry and pharmacy', sampling dried-reindeer meat, crowberry juice, herbal tea (nettle) and roseroot tincture. The North Cape

In summer, you might come across herds of grazing reindeer at this far-northern outpost at the top of Europe. In winter, endless white plains and snow-capped mountains, dramatic weather and the Arctic´s special light. Just before reaching the cape in winter and early spring, the bus must follow a snowplough. The North Cape plateau itself soars 307 metres, almost vertically, above the Arctic Ocean.

The iconic `globe´ sculpture has become the symbol of North Cape, and is a popular spot to get that all-important picture. At North Cape Hall, built partially into the cliff, you can watch an impressive 180° panoramic film about the local Finnmark region and North Cape itself. Inside you also find a souvenir shop, viewpoint, a small chapel and Thai museum, opened in 1989 to commemorate a visit by the King of Siam in 1907.

The excursion departs Honningsvåg by coach, crossing through fantastic scenery on the island Magerøya, towards the tiny fishing hamlets of Kamøyvær and Skarsvåg. Along the way, your guide tells you about the nature, local culture and history. In Skarsvåg, we visit the `Christmas and Winter House´, known for its quaint Yuletide ambiance and Christmas decorations year round. Admire and acquire locally produced ornaments and knitwear, and learn about the life of a fisherman`s family in the world’s northernmost fishing village. The Sámi are indigenous people living on Europe’s northern fringe. They are known for herding reindeer, their distinctive handicrafts (duodji) and affinity for nature. The Sámi homeland (recognised and protected under the international conventions of indigenous peoples) is named Sàpmi and extends from the middle of Norway to north-western Russia, including northern Sweden and northern Finland. On this excursion, we learn about the challenges faced by today´s reindeer herders, as well as how traditional ways can remain relevant in the modern world.

Sámi reindeer herders symbolise the culture and are dependent on vast areas of wilderness. They still live a nomadic lifestyle, following the reindeer migrations from the plains to the coast in April and back again in September. On this excursion you meet a herding family and their reindeer at summer pasture on the Nordkyn peninsula. They invite you to a close and evocative encounter around the fire in their traditional lavvo (teepee) while reindeer graze outside. The members of the family are reindeer herders, artisans and heralds of Sámi traditions.

They provide insight into the challenges that reindeer herders and Sámi culture contend with. Through stories, chanting (joik), handicrafts and reindeer broth, you get a genuine taste of Sámi culture.

In Havøysund, board a RIB (rigid-inflatable boat) for an exhilarating ride along the rugged Finnmark coastline. You will see seabirds nesting along the base of cliffs, and learn about the local wildlife, geography and culture from your guide.

View the impressive North Cape plateau from the sea level before heading to Hornvika, which was the starting point for climbs up the plateau up until the road was built in 1965.

Continue to Skarsvåg – the northernmost fishing village in the world – where there will be a short hike to Kirkeporten, a special rock formation with spectacular views. The vistas become more dramatic as we approach Kirkenes. We arrive in nearby Vadsø early in the morning and just after breakfast, arrive in Kirkenes, at 30° East, further east than Istanbul and St. Petersburg. This is Hurtigruten’s turning point for the return journey southwards. Kirkenes is known as the capital of the Barents region and gateway to the east.

The Russian border is a just few miles away. You may find it intriguing that the local road signs are written in both Norwegian and Russian. Depending on the season, there are many ways to visit the Russian frontier. Travel either by bus (all year), enjoy a riverboat safari, or join an action-packed trip on ATV/quad-bikes. Kirkenes also boasts several fascinating small museums recounting the remarkably rich history and heritage of this remote region.

Spending time in Kirkenes provides the opportunity to take part in numerous adventurous activities into the Arctic environment. In winter and spring, you can join several activities and excursions, for example, exploring the Arctic wilderness on a snowmobile and driving over a frozen fjord. During the trip, your guides tell you about the history of the region, the extreme Arctic climate and the area´s unique wildlife. On our dog-sledge adventures, huskies eagerly transport you across the frozen Arctic landscape. In summer, you can join the excursion where you catch and eat giant king crab from the Barents Sea.

Southbound and down
As the ship starts its voyage south, you can first enjoy lunch followed by views of the surrounding Arctic landscape on deck or from the panorama lounge. As we depart Kirkenes, you’ve only seen half of what our voyage along the Norwegian coastline has to offer. Prepare yourself for many new experiences. The ports previously visited by night on the northbound journey are now seen by day.

In the afternoon, the ship again docks at Vardø, Norway’s easternmost port. Weather permitting, we may invite you to experience ice bathing in the Arctic Ocean in winter. On board in spring, there is a presentation about shorebirds residing along the Nordic coastline. Heading south, we cruise along the Varanger peninsula to Båtsfjord, before reaching Berlevåg in the evening. The latter town is home to one of Norway’s most famous male choirs, consisting mainly of local fishermen.

The Russian Border

The only town in Norway where East meets West, Kirkenes represents the turning point of your Hurtigruten voyage. You can see the Russian influence characterized by street signs in both languages, and you can often hear Russian being spoken. We drive to the Norwegian-Russian border at Storskog. The border crossing defines the limits of the Schengen area, and is one of the most guarded borders in Europe. Unfortunately, it is not allowed to cross the border, but you can take pictures.

We continue to Gapahuken Restaurant with a spectacular view of Russia. Here we learn more about Russian culture, and get tastings on food from Russia. It is also possible to shop for Russian crafts. From here, we continue to the mining town of Bjørnevatn, where we visit the cold miner’s monument. Back in Kirkenes we will take you to another viewpoint on the Prestefjellet (mountain) for an overview of Kirkenes before we return to the ship.

By the time you reach the jetty, the river boats are ready to take you up the Pasvikelva, a river with a cultural history dating back thousands of years. While sailing up the river you get to hear about the history of the Sámi people, the sacred Princes Boris and Gleb and St. Trifon of the Pechenga Monastery. At the border, we go ashore and learn a little bit more about Norway’s relationship with its neighbor to the East, Russia.

Then you can enjoy a hot drink complimented by cloudberries with cream. On the way back, the guide tells you about the rich animal and plant life that thrives in the area. Reindeer, fish and bears make this one of the most exciting wilderness areas in Norway.

The guide meets you at the quay and introduces you to safety instructions before you drive in pairs to the viewpoint overlooking the Sydvaranger mines. The Russian border at Skafferhullet was the former border crossing point between Murmansk (Russia) and Finnmark (Norway). From here you can see a Russian dwelling and a Russian chapel. At the current border station between Russia and Norway, Storskog, we serve coffee and a snack. On the way back to Kirkenes, there will be a brief stop at Prestfjellet Mountain to enjoy the view of both the town and your waiting Hurtigruten ship.

The track we follow is in a landscape of frozen lakes, through forest landscapes and snowy plateaus so you will get close to the arctic wilderness. When the sun returns, the climate gets milder and the daylight lasts longer. After the trip, we gather around the campfire for a hot drink.

In the middle of the night, we dock at Mehamn, where it is possible to join an unforgettable snowmobile trip through one of Europe's most extreme and exciting natural areas during winter time. Experience snow-clad valleys, fresh winter air and perhaps the mesmerising Northern Lights in the clear, starry sky.

At Honningsvåg you can join an excursion that features breakfast at North Cape and the discovery of hidden parts of Finnmark along the way between May and October. Before stopping in Hammerfest, you can enjoy an 'energy coffee' and short introduction to Melkøya - the world´s northernmost natural gas terminal'. Hammerfest was founded in 1789, and over time became Norway's polar capital, serving as a base for hunting expeditions into the High Arctic. Here you can see the UNESCO-listed Meridian Column, erected in 1854 to commemorate the first precise geographic measurement of the globe. In winter, you can also join a mini-mountain expedition to experience the Arctic outdoors and learn about local polar hero and cook, Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm.

We continue south to Øksfjord. After crossing open water, we make a brief stop at the old trading post of Skjervøy. In spring, we sail through the beautiful Lyngenfjord, surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Lyngen Alps: Here, you might get a taste of fresh locally-caught prawns.

We then dock at Tromsø, just in time to enjoy a magical midnight concert at the Arctic Cathedral. In summer, you can join a midnight excursion, under the Midnight Sun, to explore Tromsø by sea in a RIB boat. Alternatively, a walk around the town provides you the chance to enjoy a beverage at one of the city´s many friendly pubs.

The Northernmost Town In The World

Established in 1789, Hammerfest is one of the world´s northernmost towns, with a lot of unique history to share. This excursion starts with a visit to the Museum of Reconstruction of Finnmark and Northern Troms. The museum features an impressive exhibition about the impact World War II had on Northern Norway and the massive post-war efforts to rebuild the region. Our next stop is the Meridian Column, a UNESCO World Heritage site commemorating the first official measurement of the earth´s exact size and shape.

From here, we have a spectacular view of the liquid natural gas (LNG) refinery on the nearby island of Melkøya, the processing site for natural gas produced from the Snøhvit offshore field in the Barents Sea. The town of Hammerfest has a long, eventful history. Back in 1891, for example, it was the first town in northern Europe to get electric street lighting run on hydropower. As we head up Mount Salen, you learn more about Hammerfest’s unique history dating back to the Viking Age. Atop Salen we enjoy great views over the town and our waiting ship.

Mountain Hike In Hammerfest

We begin our guided hike in the city and pass by the distinctive parish church before heading for the slopes of Mount Salen. Hammerfest was established in 1789 at the site of an old anchorage. The first part of the name, `Hammer´, derives from the Old Norse word, `Hamarr´, which means `steep mountainside´.

The second part, `fest´, comes from the Old Norse word, `festr´, which means `fastening´ (for boats). On our way out of town, we follow `Gammelveien´ (`the Old Way´), which is essentially a hiking path around Mount Salen and was once the only way in and out of the city.

During our ascent, we also pass through Hammerfest’s only forest, Jansvannskogen. Scaling the mountain´s summit demands a fair amount of physical fitness, but the stunning views are worth it. On a clear day you can see the islands of Melkøya, Sørøya and Seiland. The route down follows a popular zigzag path to the town centre, where we take a well-earned rest before heading back to the ship.

Into The Ice: Stories Of A Polar Hero

Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm from Hammerfest was a cook and explorer who participated in all the expeditions that nurtured Norway’s status as an important polar nation. Lindstrøm joined Nansen, Amundsen and Sverdrup on their expeditions to both the North Pole and South Pole. He sailed through the North-West Passage and around the American continent. No Norwegian had more experience in Arctic and Antarctic areas.

Learn even more about this remarkable polar legend on this excursion, which begins with a bus trip from Hammerfest pier to `Framheim´, a large cosy tent with fireplace named after the Amundsen expedition camp at the South Pole, on nearby Mount Salen. After donning warm clothes we launch our own expedition by foot to the top of the mountain where you really get a sense of being outdoors in the Arctic. We plant a Norwegian flag at the summit and return to `Framheim´ for a taste of Lindstrøm’s favourite recipes.

We arrive at Harstad this morning, where you have the opportunity to participate in one of the classic Hurtigruten excursion programmes: A taste of Vesterålen. Experience history, beautiful scenery and a selection of breathtaking sites that include a visit to Trondenes Church, one of Norway's premier cultural heritage sites from the late Middle Ages.

Those who choose to stay on board can admire views of this old church as we sail towards the Risøyrenna, a shallow 7-metre-deep channel made especially for Hurtigruten in the 1920s to provide an 'inside route' between Harstad and Sortland. The sand banks along the Risøyrenna are visible through the clear, green water.

The island groups of Lofoten and Vesterålen offer some of the most stunning scenery you will see during the entire coastal voyage. The Lofoten region is renowned for its natural beauty with steep mountains, wild nature and small, picturesque fishing villages. The daylight sailing route through the Lofoten Islands is a highlight for many of our guests.

Risøyhamn is a small village with only 200 inhabitants, and we make a short stop here to deliver passengers, groceries and mail. As a springtime tribute to the region´s fishing history, our chef shows how to fillet the catch of the day on deck. We then continue south via Sortland to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded more than 125 years ago. Go ashore and pay a visit to the Hurtigruten museum here. Continuing southwards, it looks like we are sailing straight into the mountain wall, but we inevitably slip through an opening leading to the narrow Raftsund. This 20-km passage between Lofoten and Vesterålen takes you through mountains soaring 1,000 metres directly out of the sea.

Trollfjord and the Lofoten islands
Now we reach the spectacular Trollfjord, only 2 km long and 100 metres wide, surrounded by majestic mountains. If the weather and time permit – the captain makes a detour into the fjord. Steep cliffs hug the ship´s sides and the dramatic landscape conjures fairy tale images of an imaginary land of trolls. Trollfjord is also the realm of the sea eagle.

Just north of the fjord, a smaller vessel awaits to take you out to see this magnificent bird up close on an optional sea eagle safari. To join the safari, you transfer to a smaller tour boat before we reach the Trollfjord. If there is time, you will see the Hurtigruten ship turns around in the narrow fjord, a magnificent sight in its own right! The eagle safari begins after leaving the Trollfjord, passing through narrow channels flanked by steep mountains where the sea eagles dwell and can be viewed. These beautiful, rare birds of prey circle the boat a few times before we toss fish into the sea for them to grab and devour. Be sure to bring a camera!

Reaching Svolvær, you can choose from several excursion options. Join our Lofoten Islands tour to learn more about the fishing communities, beautiful scenery and art from this area. You can join a horseback ride and experience a sunset trot through powdery white sand on a beach along the Norwegian Sea. If you want more of an adrenaline rush, join one of our excursions by RIB.

A Taste of Vesterålen

The tour starts with a short sightseeing jaunt through the streets of Harstad, before moving on by bus to the Trondenes peninsula. Here, we visit a white medieval church, one of Northern Norway´s premier cultural heritage sites from the late Middle Ages. You are truly on historic ground. At the Trondenes Historical Centre, we visit an exciting exhibition complete with sounds, smells and original objects from the region throughout history – from the Viking and Middle Ages, to the present day. The bus then takes us across Hinnøya Island, where we admire the view of beautiful fjords, steep mountains and large fertile agricultural fields.

Moving on, we cross the Gullesfjord by ferry, and enjoy a hot drink and some freshly baked cakes. The tour then continues along the Sigerfjord to Sortland where you rejoin your ship. This excursion is a beautiful experience in all seasons; idyllic in the summer, but just as picture perfect in winter.

During the guided trip from Svolvær to Stamsund, you get to see sheltered bays, white sandy beaches and large, green farmland. Henningsvær is a charming fishing village with only 500 inhabitants. In the 18th century it was the most important fishing village in Lofoten. The beautiful harbour is also full of quaint local arts and crafts shops. The Trollfjord is one of Norway’s most spectacular fjords. Just north of here, a smaller vessel takes you out to see the sea eagles. If time, you accompany the Hurtigruten ship into the Trollfjord where you will see it turning around in the narrowest of spaces, a magnificent sight. The eagle safari begins when you leave the Trollfjord, starting with the gulls, which dive for fish right from your hand.

The sea eagles can be viewed as they fly in to get a share of the meal. The guides let these beautiful, rare birds of prey circle the boat a few times, before they throw fish into the sea for them to catch. Very often we observe several majestic birds during the trip.

Afterwards, we set course for Svolvær, leaving you with memories that will last long after you return home.

We travel in RIB (rigid inflatable boats) from Stokmarknes across dramatic Raftsundet to the narrow Trollfjord. Here we go ashore to hear the story of the battle of Trollfjord that took place near here in 1890 between competing fishermen.

A snack is served before we continue by boat between small islets and skerries to the island of Skrova, known for its export of salmon all over the world.  Along the way, we also stop to look for sea eagles before returning to Svolvær.

Experienced skippers take us first to an idyllic lagoon with white sandy beaches that are surrounded by small islands and skerries protecting it from the often-turbulent open ocean. There is a very good chance you will see sea eagles, Europe’s largest bird of prey. After making a short photo stop, we continue at high speed on the Vestfjord to the island fishing village of Skrova, with just under 200 inhabitants. Fishing and whaling in the `old days´ once swelled the island´s population to several thousand. Here, we stop for a snack and learn about the village´s history and its present livelihood exporting salmon around the world.

We then head back across the Vestfjord to Svolvær where we are greeted at the harbour entrance by the statue of the `Fisherman’s Wife´ before re-boarding our waiting ship.

The tour starts with an early evening bus trip from Svolvær to Hov Hestegård on Gimsøy, Here, we begin our guided trail ride on Icelandic horses through breathtaking nature! We journey across on a long white sandy beach along the Norwegian Sea, through rugged rocky terrain, and among remains from the Viking Age. During summer there is perpetual daylight, but during autumn and winter we ride in darkness, listening to the waves slap the shoreline and gazing skyward to see the mystical Northern Lights.

The route and horses are well suited for both beginners and experienced riders. Icelandic horses are known for their gentle temperament and comfortable gait. If you wish to go a bit faster, you get the chance to try trot and tölt. Come along and join us on this unforgettable Lofoten experience.

Discover a fishing village

The town of Svolvær has been a thriving fishing community since 1828 and maintains that tradition today. On this excursion, we explore the town´s oldest quarter on the adjacent small island of Svinøya. The fisheries industry is still of major importance to the region. The Lofoten cod fishery has always been the basis of existence for the people who live here. Wandering among the `rorbuer´ (fishermen’s huts) and iconic stock fish racks you easily immerse yourself in the atmosphere. On Svinøya you view the sea on one side and a spectacular mountain backdrop on the other.

First, we visit an original fisherman’s cabin that takes you 100 years back in time and shows how the fishermen lived. Here, we get to taste locally dried and cured stock fish. You also receive at small complimentary portion of stockfish to take back home.

Next, we visit a gallery dedicated to the local 19th century artist Gunnar Berg, who tragically died at the age of 30 and was known for his paintings of Lofoten. The tour ends with a visit to Svolvær’s first store Krambua.

Bodø - Rørvik

Crossing the Arctic Circle at 66°33’N is an important ‘rite of passage’. Today we celebrate the event out on deck with a `taste´ of Arctic tradition – a spoonful of cod liver oil. As we sail along the Helgeland coast, you pass hundreds of islets, fertile farmland and steep granite walls rich in local lore. On deck you can see the strange mountain Torghatten (rising 258 m above sea level), famous for its distinctive hole right through the middle. The hole is 160 m long, 35 m high and 20 m wide, and was created during the ice age.

Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountain range. All seven mountains are between 900 and 1,100 m high, and it is easy to understand how these ‘ladies’ influenced ancient myths. The story goes that there were seven troll sisters, the daughters of King Sulis, who kept them under strict control. One night, when the king fell into a deep sleep, the seven maidens sneaked out. Vågekallen, who was eager for a wife, was lying in wait. He pursued the sisters, who fled southwards down the coast. Several other trolls joined the chase to either capture or rescue them. When night turned to morning, the troll sisters and their pursuers were petrified as the sun turns all trolls to stone. They all became the rocks and mountains that today make the Helgeland coastline one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Next we make a short stop at Nesna, an idyllic old trading post before moving on to Sandnessjøen. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Vega Islands is close to Sandnessjøen and can be visited on an optional excursion during summer. This unique cultural landscape consists of dozens of islands. The UNESCO designation was awarded due to the unique interaction between the eider duck and island population. Learn how the fishermen and farmers have cultivated a centuries-old symbiotic relationship with the ducks, and how it continues to contribute to a livelihood of eiderdown harvesting and making down-filled duvets.

Brønnøysund is a vibrant and pretty little town. Spend some time to stroll around and enjoy looking at the small boats and bustling life of the archipelago. You can also join the excursion to the Norwegian Aquaculture Centre near Brønnøysund for an informative tour and taste of fresh salmon from April throughout October, or one of the other excursions we offer here.

Between Sandnessjøen and Brønnøysund lies the island of Vega. This wonderful cultural landscape was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004. The basis of the status is the islanders´ outstanding tradition for tending wild eider ducks.

The trip from Sandnessjøen passes myriad offshore islands leading to Gardsøy on Vega. Enjoy a visit to Vega World Heritage Centre and a journey through the history of the Vega archipelago, from the early Stone Age settlements to modern times. Get an insight into the 1500-year-old practice of tending eider ducks, a tradition that continues to this day.

After an eventful day, we travel along the idyllic Helgeland coastline to Brønnøysund and re-board the ship.

Norway is one of the world’s major exporters of fish and seafood. Norwegian seafood is consumed daily by about 37 million people worldwide. The cool, clear waters along Norway´s northern coastline provide optimal conditions for sustainable and responsible aquaculture. This excursion starts with a short bus tour around the coastal town of Brønnøysund before we cross the city´s magnificent bridge and continue to the Norwegian Aquaculture Centre in Toft.

Here you learn about modern aquaculture and the natural environment around the aquaculture facility. Find out about fish development and the technologies necessary to raise fish from an egg to finished product, and see how salmon and cod live at a demonstration fish farm at the centre. You can even take part in feeding the fish. You can also try using an underwater camera in an interactive exhibit at the fish farm, and taste freshly harvested salmon.

Day 11

Trondheim - Disembarkation

The ship heads slowly into the majestic Trondheimsfjord, which is 170 kilometres long and up to 25 kilometres wide. Like all other Norwegian fjords it is deep - up to 577 metres at the most. As we sail along the coast and into Trondheim, it becomes apparent how important the fishing industry is to the Norwegian coastal communities.

Our arrival in Trondheim sees the end of this voyage, but that doesn't mean that the adventure is over. Extend your stay and explore the city on your own, and discover the city's 1000-year long history by visiting the Nidaros Cathedral - Norway's national monument and only Gothic cathedral.
